Another 'Fabulous' Win For Improving Stayer...

Successful two starts prior over the same course and distance, progressive stayer More Than Fabulous contested Wednesday’s opening race at Canterbury, the McGrath Handicap over 1900m.

With leading jockey Hugh Bowman in the saddle, the son of More Than Ready jumped away with the rest of the small field and allowed the two runners on his outside to cross him, where the rising four-year-old took a sit in third position.

As the field passed the finishing post on the first occasion, Bowman had the Markus and Ingrid Jooste-owned gelding settled in third position on the outside of Duke De Vega, while Fat Chap and Multitude had headed towards the lead.

Eventually dropping back into fourth to get a trail on the rails, Bowman allowed More Than Fabulous plenty of time to find his feet and the Cressfield-consigned Easter yearling graduate appeared to have the race well in his keeping throughout.

With about 600m to travel, the runs started to come from those at the back of the field, and Bowman found himself in last position, but always knew he was on the best runner in the field and there was no need to panic.

Within a matter of strides, Bowman urged More Than Fabulous through the field where he found himself travelling outside the weakening leader.

At the 300m mark More Than Fabulous was full of running as the gelding powered away from the rest of the field to record a commanding length and a half victory from Multitude, with a further two lengths back to the Gerald Ryan-trained Storm System in third.

With earnings just shy of $200,000 for his connections from 15 top three placed finishes, More Than Fabulous continues to race in fine style and a Saturday win looks on the cards in the near future.
