Doc Holliday Brings Up Third Win

Off the back of a four week freshen-up, improving High Chaparral three-year-old Doc Holliday showed he is an exciting proposition for the future, winning the Lance Carmichael Memorial Hawkesbury Stayers Prelude – Benchmark 75 Handicap at Hawkesbury on Thursday.

Raced by South Africa’s leading owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste of Nordic Racing And Breeding Pty Ltd, Doc Holliday was ridden by Winona Costin who jumped him away slowly from the barriers before going forward to settle in a mid-field position.

In a very open race, Doc Holliday started at double figure odds behind the David Vandyke-trained Chastened, who was having his first start since a second in a recent barrier trial.

As the second favourite Supercoach went many lengths in front, ensuring that there was a solid tempo from the start, giving all runners their chance.

One of the first to make their move was from Reiby The Red as he pulled off the leaders’ back to make his run.

As Reiby The Red hit the lead as the field charged into the home straight; Doc Holliday was still towards the tail of the field, with Costin searching for a run.

One of the widest runners into the straight, Doc Holliday ambled towards the lead under hands and heels riding, where he simply out stayed his rivals, showing them a clear pair of heels in the run to the line.

Defeating Godolphin’s Medaglia d’Oro colt Nazca by two and a quarter lengths, Reiby The Red held on for third a further head away.

With three wins from eight starts, the future looks bright for the gelding and he would not look out of place if he heads to some of the classic races during the Brisbane Winter Carnival.

Purchased at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, the three-year-old gelding is a full-brother to Parachute Man, a stakes performer in South Africa, both out of the stakes placed Danehill mare Fiammarosa, herself a full-sister to Group 1 winner Shinzig and the Listed winner Strada.
