Just What The ‘Doc’ Ordered

Away from the outside barrier in a seven horse field, four-year-old High Chaparral gelding Doc Holliday went forward under the urgings of jockey Glyn Schofield, travelling three wide around the first bend to head past leader Supercoach and take up the running in the McGrath Estate Agents Handicap.

Eventually finding the rail, the Markus and Ingrid Jooste-owned galloper maintained a nice tempo in the lead, with Bjorn Baker's Supercoach settling just off his back.

At the 800m, jockey Kerrin McEvoy aboard the Gwenda Markwell-trained Shelley’s Girl started to make a challenge, but it was short lived as Doc Holliday and Supercoach extended their lead before the home turn.

200m from home it appeared as if Doc Holliday would finish an honest second as Supercoach put his head in front, with apprentice Andrew Adkins getting the best from his mount.

Matthew Smith’s Marilisa (NZ) was making some good ground along the inside rail and just as she pulled alongside Doc Holliday, Schofield got the best out of his mount and the pair pulled away from Supercoach who finished in third.

Taking the race by a head margin, the victory was the fourth win from 14 starts for the gelding and with three of those wins at 2000m plus, it is evident that his future is in staying races.

Congratulations to Nordic Racing and Breeding's Markus and Ingrid Jooste who are a great supporter of the David Payne Racing stable.
