Payne, Panya and Foreign Prince (NZ) make it two wins in succession

The combination of Rosehill trainer David Payne, apprentice jockey Deanne Panya and five-year-old Foreign Prince (NZ) completed their second win in succession after their plan worked to perfection in the $85,000, Kensei Handicap (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Payne gave Panya instructions to roll forward and not worry if the small field tried to keep her wide and then put the hammer down with 800m to run.

Panya followed them from the outset and she did not fuss when Sebrina (54kg) and Kerrin McEvoy and Beyond Thankful (61kg) and Hugh Bowman tried to do exactly what Payne said they would by keeping Foreign Prince (53kg) three wide as they rolled to the back straight.

The apprentice’s patience paid off and she as able to lead into the back and then with 1000m to run cross to the rails. There Panya stayed with Foreign Prince and while she waited for the 600m before she increased the pace that too worked.

They had a 2L lead entering the main straight and then sticking hard against the rails Panya and Foreign Prince high tailed it to the line and the rest had no answer.

The $2.00 favourite Sebrina (Sebring) and McEvoy remained in second with Loophole (NZ) (Lonhro) (57kg) and Ty Angland third, the margin 1L. Jiayuguan as fourth and Beyond Thankful fifth.

The time was 2.04.91 on the Soft 7 track with the final 600m in 37.02. Foreign Prince paid $4.40 on fixed odds and $5.10 on the tote.

“She did exactly what I told her which is very good,” said Payne.

“I told her that they know you are going to go to the front so you sit there for the first couple of furlongs (400m) and stay off the fence and from the 800m step it up a bit because it is a tactical race.

“We will look for something with a light weight, one of the country cups or interstate. He has been a good little horse though,” he said.

“He is a nice genuine horse, he tries hard and I stuck to the fence because I walked the track before the first and I did not want to get off it,” said Panya.

The combination won at Rosehill over 1800m on June 4th and this second win in succession took the wins for Foreign Prince, by High Chaparral out of the Stravinsky mare Julinsky Princess, to seven from 28 starts.

There is a Royal Ascot connection in the ownership with part-owner Richard Pegum winning at the Royal meeting on Friday with the Ralph Beckett trained Kinema in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap.

Pegum’s co-owners in Foreign Prince are Wulf Mula’s Aston Bloodstock, Rosemary Mula, Luskin Park Stud Racing, Wayne and Mrs S G Aldridge, Mr J L Bromley and Payne. His stakes tally has increased to $422,700.
