Trainer David Payne puts faith in Blake Shinn to deliver fab double at Canterbury

Trainer David Payne is relying on the brilliance of Blake Shinn to secure a stable double with More Than Fabulous and Sweet Chestnut at Canterbury on Wednesday.

“I thought about using a claiming apprentice on both horses but if you can get Blake then that is a real bonus,’’ Payne said. “Blake is riding so confidently at the moment — he could win on anything!”

Shinn has ridden 19 winners at Canterbury over the last 12 months more than any other jockey.

With the Canterbury track bordering on heavy on Wednesday, Payne believes he can provide Shinn with another winner at Sydney’s main midweek venue on More Than Fabulous in the Schweppes Handicap (1900m).

More Than Fabulous (pictured as a yearling) has been improved by three runs from a spell including his close second to So Willie at Rosehill on a very heavy track earlier this month.

“We know he handles the wet tracks and he is ready for 1900m now,’’ Payne said. “He has only won one race (from 22 starts) but he has been in the placings (11 starts) or thereabouts in most of his other runs. He will be thereabouts again.’’

Payne was also optimistic juvenile filly Sweet Chestnut would be right in the finish of the Press Statement At Vinery Handicap (1100m).

Sweet Chestnut ran a pleasing first-up fourth behind promising youngsters Conchita and Star Crossed at Randwick and like stablemate More Than Fabulous she is coming back from Saturday class to midweek grade.

“She only had one soft trial going into Randwick so that run will bring her on,” Payne said. “In her Randwick run she missed the break and that is why she got a little further back than I would have liked.

“From the good barrier (five) I’m hoping she jumps cleanly and settles a little closer to the lead because she will finish the race off strongly.’’
