Delago Thunders To Debut Victory

In what was a piece of history, the David Payne Racing Stable produced the first winner for the Australian-bred, South African raced Delago Deluxe, as the two-year-old filly Delago Thunder scored impressively on debut at Kembla Grange ton win the Single Gaze 2YO Maiden Plate over 1000m

A dual Group 1-winning Champion 2YO when raced in South Africa, Delago Deluxe (Encosta de Lago) headed back to Australia for stud duties to stand at Newhaven Park, the very same stud that sold Delago Thunder as a yearling at the Magic Millions when purchased by Blue Sky Bloodstock for $150,000.

Raced by Nordic Racing and Breeding, the Australian-arm of leading South African owner Markus and Ingrid Jooste, who also raced Delago Deluxe, Delago Thunder was ridden by Mitchell Bell who jumped the filly away well before she settled towards the tail of the field.

Happy to stay out of trouble, Bell urged the Delago Thunder towards the outside, before pushing through a gap just before the home turn where she worked home well to get up just before the line to take the race narrowly, but impressively.

Bell was suitably impressed by the winning performance of the filly.

"She's got plenty of scope and will be winning more races," said Bell.

Delago Thunder is the first foal from the multiple stakes placed Written Tycoon mare Alezan Thunder who showed great juvenile ability, so it would be no surprise to see this filly continue to step up in class during her two-year-old season over the coming weeks.

Congratulations to her winning connections for continuing to support the David Payne Racing Stable.
