Group 1 Goals For Colesberg

All the talk before the commencement of the $100,000 Happy 2017 Handicap (1200m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday was in relation to the Gary Portelli-trained Single Bullet, but after the race is was Single Bullet who, as exciting two-year-old Colesberg produced the goods to break his maiden on debut.

Purchased at last year’s Magic Millions yearling sale from the draft of Vinery Stud, Colesberg is by the slightly unfashionably Congrats, but David Payne saw something in the then colt that had him parting with $130,000 for the half-brother to South African Group 1 winner Entisaar.

After the getaway from the barrier, jockey Blake Shinn had the gelding settled towards the tail of the field, as Radiant Choice and Single Bullet went forward to take up the running.

The widest on the turn after getting a cosy run behind, Colesberg sprinted impressively down the outside to take the win, and had Payne suggesting that Colesberg was the next Chimboraa, another son of Congrats he trained who had performed well in the juvenile stakes races, finishing second at Group 1 level in the Champagne Stakes before being sold to Hong Kong interests for $1.4million.

“He is going to be a nice Champagne (Stakes) horse, he has always had the ability and he showed that in his trial the other day. I said to Wilf that we are going to have to run him 1200m or plus and when the rain came that made the difference,” said Payne.

“He is a lovely horse and I think there is improvement in him and we will see where he goes. He might have a short spell with a couple of weeks out,” he said.

Jockey Blake Shinn was also of the opinion that Colesberg would be better suited as the distances increase.

“He probably stepped out a little bit slow, maybe half a length, and he is a horse that will certainly be better over 1400m to 1600m so I let him balance up and rode him to be strong late. And he was, he attacked the line with plenty of gusto,” said Shinn.

Unsure of his next move, Colesberg could possibly take a break before being aimed at the lead-up races to the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) during the Sydney Autumn carnival.
