Offspring of old foes have Payne looking to the future

There were memories of the 2008 Coolmore Classic when trainer David Payne and John Cordina went to look at Deep Chill at the Magic Millions complex last year.

The then Wandjina yearling is out of Eskimo Queen, which won the Group 1 that the pair had coveted with their mare Gallant Tess.

“I guess if you can’t beat them you buy the family,” Cordina said. “It is funny, this colt and Gallant Tess's Snitzel colt have come through at the same time and they will start their careers on the same weekend.

"There seems to be a bit of competition that keeps going on between the two mares and David tells me their sons are all right. Hopefully they can live up to what their mums did.”

Payne looked at the page of Deep Chill on his way to view him and remembered the mum winning the Coolmore, in which Gallant Tess was fourth beaten just over a length. Deep Chill had initially passed in before Cordina parted with $120,000 for her.

“We walked down there and I was reliving that race. It was one of many hard luck stories for Gallant Tess,” Payne said. “He was a nice colt and I actually said to John, 'You remember this mare, don't you?'

"He just nodded. It's good to get him in the stable.

“Out of the two colts, [Deep Chill] is more of a two-year-old. He has had the three trials and was a bit slow but when we put the blinkers on him he switched on.

"He won that last trial and I think he is up to running very well.”

Payne will split the two colts with Deep Chill to go on Friday night, where Tony McEvoy's boom filly Just Zerene awaits after missing out on a run in the Magic Milions Classic.

Crown Affair (pictured) will wait for Saturday but patience will be needed with him, said Payne, who has him marked as a miler.

“I like to get them in and having a run early because it is good to have that experience,” Payne said. “He is going to get better with time and more ground but like with Ace High and Criterion you need to get them some experience.
