Stronger Ace High To Have Barrier Trial At Rosehill

Trainer David Payne expects Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Ace High (High Chaparral) to make a lowkey return at today’s Rosehill barrier trials when the three-yearold takes on champion mare Winx (Street Cry) and The Everest (1200m) winner Redzel (Snitzel).

Ace High, who also won the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) during the spring, will also take on Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) in heat one over 900 metres on the Rosehill course proper this morning.

Payne told ANZ Bloodstock News that Ace High would wear blinkers in today’s barrier trial, with regular jockey Tye Angland taking the ride on the High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) colt.

“They will be too sharp for him tomorrow but he has got to have a blow out to get him a bit fitter,” Payne said yesterday.

“He is quite a lazy bugger and you have to make him work. We swim him as well, so the fitness is there, but he will wear a set of blinkers just to make him focus a bit more.

“He will have a nice trial without knocking him about.”

Payne confirmed Ace High was likely to be aimed at the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in the autumn.

“He will race in Sydney first up and it will either be over 1200 metres or 1400 metres and then we’ll get him to the Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and hopefully the Derby,” he said.

“We will see how feels (after today’s barrier trial) and then we will decide if he needs another one before he runs first up.”

Ace High, who raced six times as a two-year-old which included a fourth placing in the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick, has strengthened up during his spell, according to Payne.

“He has furnished behind. He was always a bit light and he filled out nicely behind now,” he said.

Payne also has promising three-year-old All Too Soon (All Too Hard), who won her maiden at Randwick over 1800 metres on 7 November, in heat four over 1030 metres.

Owned in the same interests as Ace High, All Too Soon could be aimed at the Vinery Stud Stakes (registered as Storm Queen Stakes) (Gr 1, 2000m) during the autumn.

“She is a nice filly and we could look at the Oaks with her, but it might be on the far side for her,” he said.

“We’ll get her to the races over 2000 metres for the fillies and then decide whether we head to the Oaks with her.

“(Last preparation) her hocks were a little bit weak but she has picked up nicely now.”

Angland will also ride All Too Soon in today’s barrier trial.

Payne will also unveil a number of juveniles at Rosehill this morning, with seven two-year-olds to have a hit out for the former champion South African trainer.

Among Payne’s juveniles set to appear today is an unraced gelding by Americain (Dynaformer) called Costello who is entered for heat seven over 900 metres.

“We have some nice two-year-olds and Costello is a lovely horse,” he said.

“He is by Americain out of La Famelia and is a lovely horse in the making once he gets out over a trip.

“They are all going to be late horses, so we will give them a trial and then decide whether they have a freshen up in the paddock or give them a run.”
