Two For Payne Racing

With the first two sales of the Australasian yearling sales series – the Magic Millions and New Zealand Bloodstock yearling sales both being incredibly strong, it was clear that the Inglis Classic, set to be the first sale held at the new Riverside Stables complex, would also follow suit.

While it took until the third day to finally secure a yearling, having been beaten on a few the day prior, the Payne Racing stable made their fist purchase, Lot 411 from the draft of Bhima Thoroughbreds.

Bred by Kia-Ora Stud, the Deep Field colt is out of the unraced Galileo mare Gayika, herself a full-sister to the Australian bred, but South African raced Igugu, Horse of the Year, multiple Champion and also four-time Group 1 winner.

Not only is a mare related to Igugu, but she is also a half-sister to Honorius, a son of Holy Roman Emperor that the stable trained a few years back to victory in the Group 3 Craven Plate, as well as multiple stakes-placings, highlighted by third placed performances in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes and Group 1 Queensland Derby. A winner on four occasions, twice at two, Honorius has now retired to stud where he is standing in South Australia.

Deep Field’s progeny have been extremely popular in the sale ring, and the Group 2-winning, Group 1 placed son of Northern Meteor has produced quality types and this colt is a fine example.

Waiting until four lots before the end of the sale to secure our next purchase, we were extremely pleased to take home Lot 796, a chestnut colt by Declaration Of War out of the winning Mugharreb mare Pink Ice, herself a half-sister to the multiple stakes-winning Singapore-based galloper Twickenham.

While the progeny of the Coolmore-based sire are only two-year-old’s in the southern hemisphere and therefore we have only seen a handful, in the northern hemisphere his progeny are performing extremely well on the tracks.

From a very winning family, the half-brother to this colt is a winner of four, while Pink Ice’s relations Black Ice is a stakes-placed winner of nine, Twickenham is a dual stakes winner of nine races and Newlands is a stakes performing winner of five races who is now currently in Dubai for Singapore-trained Stephen Gray trying to gain a start on World Cup night.
